Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to counselling@emilylightfoot.co.uk if you can't find an answer to your question.

I offer one to one counselling for adults aged 18+. Sessions can either be face to face at my practice in Chester or via phone or video call.

I'm an Integrative therapist which means I draw on different counselling approaches depending on your needs.

You'll be welcomed into a calm, safe and comfortable space.

During your first session we begin by going through a counselling contract together. This is us working together to come to an agreement on our expectations of the sessions, our boundaries and ensure you're comfortable with the therapeutic process.

Things we might cover within this agreement are confidentiality, the time and date we agree to have our sessions, each of our commitments to the process and the style of therapy being offered to you.

Once we are both happy to continue, we spend the rest of the session exploring what has brought you to therapy in a relaxed way at a pace that suits you.

A counseling session typically lasts 50 minutes.

Integrative counselling is a style of therapy that is built on more than one theory. I draw on three main theories within my work.

1. Person Centered - being offered a safe, non-judgmental and empathetic space will allow you to explore your feelings freely. Increasing self awareness allows you to make decisions that feel true to you as a person. After all, you are the expert on yourself.

2. Psychodynamic - understanding how our past experiences can shape our current feelings, behaviours and relationships. This approach helps to bring our unconscious thoughts and actions into our awareness.

3. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - we often get stuck in negative patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours and don't know how to change. This is the more practical approach where we look at tools and techniques to break those cycles.

The beauty of Integrative counselling is that it is flexible to what works best for you and what you feel most comfortable with.

You aren't required to bring anything with you to your sessions. Within the session space there is water, tissues and comfortable chairs to help you feel as ease.
